ABSTRACT

Proof of the international profile of literature in Spain was the presence of the Scandinavian countries as special guests. Activities associated with the Fair included such popular options as special events for children and author signings. Transparently trashy Spanish Movie still offers valuable evidence for what counts as national cinema for local audiences. In such newly minted events humdrum television takes on all the glamour that cinema, now so mercilessly parodied, once kept so jealously to it. The problem for the scholar of such Spanish practices is to combine qualitative and quantitative approaches, attempting to synthesize the teasing-out of textual meanings with the surveying of the cultural field. As scholars, the author may have something to learn from the bridge-crossing of Betty. Such cross-discipline fertilization should result in academic studies that may well be unauthorized or irregular, but will certainly be unexpected and unpredictable.
