ABSTRACT
This chapter describes Viktor Shklovskii's participation in cultural institutions prior to 1930 in order to build a detailed picture of his exposure to world literature. Shklovskii emphasizes that foreign classics made up a significant proportion of his formative canon and that these were 'all translations'. Shklovskii wrote about his education throughout his life, particularly in his autobio graphical novel, Tret'ia fabrika, and in his memoir 'Zhilibyli'. 'Voskreshenie slova' is notable for the range of material on which it draws, Shklovskii takes examples from the architecture of St Petersburg, from painting, and from contemporary sculpture. Importantly, Shklovskii ignores the fact that he is reading texts at several removes from their original language versions, both when he cites directly from translated works and from translations borrowed from secondary sources. Scholars have written extensively about the ideas presented by Shklovskii in 'Iskusstvo kak priem' with particular emphasis on certain terms.
