ABSTRACT

Though each area of the Inner Ward was excavated separately, the information recovered has been summarised in composite plans and phased descriptions of the archaeology for adjoining areas. Before building work on Round Tower D could begin, the natural bedrock was quarried to form a level foundation and obtain building stone. This quarrying activity created a small scoop and flat-bottomed gully in Area P, which were both formed out of a natural crack in the bedrock. In Phase 2a, masonry structures were built in Areas E and P, several of which were later altered or demolished, leaving only fragmentary remains. Phase 3a saw the construction of Great Chamber G the north wall of which abutted Areas E and P. Phase 4a witnessed a series of developments in Area P, mostly connected with providing access up to the new first-floor doorway inserted into the north wall of Great Chamber G.
