ABSTRACT

Fragments of baked clay were recovered both from excavation and fieldwalking. The bulk of the material recovered from excavations remains undated, much of it is likely to be derived from earlier features. Few fragments retained their original surfaces or any recognisable features and many had been rolled, fractured and abraded in the soil. Every effort was made to distinguish between baked clay and fired structural materials such as brick and tile. There are clear concentrations of fieldwalking material over the main known Roman sites across the parish, especially Old Church and the 'villa' site; lesser quantities were also recovered from Sladwick and Blacklands. The presence of both slate and stone roof tiles proves that a range of materials were in use through the Roman period and some buildings clearly made use of a variety of different kinds. Most of the building material is in a bright orange fabric with a grey core.
