ABSTRACT

Between 17 December 1847 and 1 December 1849, Clement de Ris also published seven articles on French provincial museums. The first four pieces on the Louvre and the Luxembourg appeared either side of the events of 22-24 February themselves and outlined the reforms he wished to see introduced in the two museums. The fifth and sixth appeared in December 1848 and January 1849 respectively and assessed the reforms which Jeanron and Villot had implemented up to that point. This chapter deals with the reform of French museology undertaken during the Second Republic and the ways in which Gautier extended the discussion of issues that Clement de Ris and others had placed so firmly on the agenda. In discussions of the reforms advocated by critics of the July Monarchy's management of the national museums, the Louvre was, of course, the focal point.
