ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the previous chapters of this book. The book concludes the study on the Salon by returning briefly to these forms of art writing and, to introduce them. It summarizes the essential features of the author's engagement with the visual arts during the Second Republic. Gautier was well aware that his knowledge of the technical issues in painting and sculpture, of the language of the studio and the tricks of the trade, gave him an important competitive advantage in art journalism. The examples presented in the book represent only a small part of those that Gautier produced in the course of the forty-nine articles in which he reviewed the Fine Art Salons of the Second Republic, which were themselves only three of the thirty Salons that he reviewed during his long career.
