ABSTRACT

117 medieval small finds, including coins and jetons and wood and leather items, were recovered with a further 60 post-medieval items and 27 clay tobacco pipes. There are also 57 medieval and 31 post-medieval objects recorded from earlier excavations. This is an important assemblage as this is the only major excavation of a medieval site in north Staffordshire. It is also the largest assemblage of small finds for medieval north Staffordshire and includes not only everyday items but some rare and unusual ones as well. Material within these areas includes religious items, craft tools and waste materials, and objects lost during funerals, such as small items from clothing or coins, as well as items deliberately placed within the graves. Dissolution it seems that material was gathered from various abbey buildings and deposited in the nave.
