ABSTRACT

My lords, you who desire the flower and the courtliness of love,

and have no care for other wealth but wish to abide with joy,

5 hear a good and beautiful romance composed offline new joy And mind that when you have heard it you do not forget the words. For never will any man do

io that which the romance ordains if he is not full o f courtliness and does not wage war on uncouthness. Let ladies and faithful lovers do the good which the romance prescribes

15 and keep themselves from the folly which the romance forbids and censures. For you know that with excess Love wrongly loses that which is his right, because Wickedness and Licentiousness

20 do not let him follow the right path. Which is why eight score ladies and maidens, have made a new [type of] love [/Love] for [/out of] a lady o f great merit, and they have invented new arguments

25 [as to] how love [/Love] can be legitimate [/loyal]. Let false men and women flee from that place, for Love holds such an assembly that deceit is certainly not fitting. Now judge how ‘Lady’ Love the sweet and good addresses his people.30
