ABSTRACT

One of the great divides in the debate about the nature of evil depends on whether one views human existence from a purely materialistic point of view or whether one adopts a spiritual or religious attitude. The Hebrew Bible raises many questions about the problem of evil. The New Testament speaks of the devil as "the ruler of this world", the "god of this age" and even that "the whole world is in the power of the evil one". Psychologically one could see the mythological figure of Satan as the projection of a negative internal object or a complex that attacks or criticizes the individual. In the Jewish tradition, the Dybbuk was considered to be a wandering soul or demonic spirit that could enter a living body. In Christian lore, the Antichrist is a completely evil human being who is an enemy of Christ and hostile to all forms of goodness.
