ABSTRACT

The impact of oestrogen reduction during menopause on everyday life is significant. The menopausal transition is associated with an increased risk of CVD and causes significant side effects described as menopausal symptoms. The symptoms of the menopause, including hot flushes, are extremely debilitating and a direct cause of anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Exercise training is known to have a positive impact on cardiovascular risk associated with the menopause as well as being an effective method to alleviate the side effects of menopause. This chapter presents evidence of how exercise training during the menopause enhances cardiovascular and metabolic health and well-being. Nevertheless, to maximise the benefits of exercise training on CVD risk and menopausal symptoms, the exercise training needs to be of sufficient intensity, duration, and frequency to cause an increase in cardiorespiratory fitness.
