ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses numerous areas related to sex and psychological aspects of sport-related concussion (SRC). It provides an overview of the most recent injury rates among male and female athletes at both the high school and collegiate level. The chapter explores sex differences in concussion symptoms, neurocognitive outcomes, recovery, and treatment. It discusses sex differences in psychological aspects of SRC. The chapter examines if there are differences between males and females for depression, anxiety, suicide, and health-related quality of life following an SRC. It also discusses if males and females cope differently and use different social support mechanisms following their head injury. The chapter investigates acute effects of SRC between male and female athletes. Understanding sex differences in concussion risk and recovery outcomes between males and females will drive management and treatment approaches in order for the athlete to return to play in a safe and efficient time period.
