ABSTRACT

Fashion is about change: The Industrial Revolution, which took us out of the manufacturing Dark Ages but brought us overconsumption, started with textiles. Sustainability has the ability to bring new jobs, new business opportunities and new types of raw materials that would not only save costs but create new revenue through novelty. More than ever, sustainability is in need of creative solutions that will make it look cool and desirable surely this is something fashion can manage. New brands are sprouting from the ground like mushrooms, and the young designers they are helmed by beam with enthusiasm. But instead of looking to the future, almost exclusively the young creatives are looking to the past for styling influences, quoting Coco Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent as their heroes. Finally, as fashion media, people should celebrate design that is responsible and support those designers that work to make it happen, instead of judging fashion based on purely aesthetic criteria.
