ABSTRACT

The fundamental distinction between one man and two or more is that where there is only one there can be no human relationship but where there is more than one - even if it is only one more than one - then there must be a relationship between them. Human relationship implies that some of them have agreed to receive instructions from others and that they also recognise that they could be punished or rewarded by their seniors. The punishments and rewards can also range from the formal and severe to the informal and trivial. The point being made is that organisations come in all shapes and sizes but all of them are built on the same basic principles - although one may have to look very carefully at some of the small, informal organisations to see that they are in fact built of the same basic bricks as the large formal ones.
