ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the properties of the Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) system. A four-storey two-asymmetric building used by Jui-Liang is selected for the SSI system, which is a modification of the examples adopted by Thambirajah. Another four-storey asymmetric superstructure resting on a rigid base modelled as the reference building (RB). The rectangular building having dimensions of 12 m × 15 m with the larger side being parallel to the y axis is used. As the benchmark, the reference building will indicate how the SSI affects the dynamic properties of the building. The periods of the building resting on the hard soil are significantly close to the reference building resting on a rigid base. The equation of motion of coupled buildings for the whole SSI systems using the direct integration method is solved considering the pounding effects. The properties of SSI system for the asymmetric building is the same with the properties of SSI system for the couple buildings.
