ABSTRACT

Certain patterns have emerged from the comparative study of the Sikhs across communities and regions. The material and social conditions have no parallels, yet cultural and religious similarities are noticeable. The broad contours of the Sikhs’ profile are thus explained in five sections, namely the oral history of arrival; the Sikh form; the Sikh identity; the issue of language and looking back to Punjab that concerns not all but the safai karamcharis of the North-East.
