ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that especially throughout American ourstory, women have functioned much as proxies for men. It is worth noting that even though during ancient times women wielded power as brutally, if not more so, than men, over time and chiefly during contemporary times that amassing of power has greatly diminished. When women do exert power today it has been more constrained, ever mindful of the perception by constituents in departing from prescribed roles. It is noteworthy how much women during World War period were functioning as an asset of and for the United States (US) military, but were essentially serving as proxies for men in uniform. Solaro's description of the military as the proxy for a married man using his mistress, a proxy for military women, at will, is repeatedly invoked in how the US military conveniently employs and deploys its female workforce.
