ABSTRACT

This chapter postulates multiple reasons for white women's premature exodus from the military in the theory of attrition. One such reason includes being cast as sexual fiends whose sole role is to serve as appendages, all for the purpose of derailing the battle-ready objectives of men. Black women, who have to straddle the dual minefields of gender and race, have been leered at and vilified for their curvaceous anatomy, not their intellect. All too often in the military culture the implicit and sometimes explicit message is that because men are trained as warriors, a woman's place is to serve at their pleasure. Throughout American culture, women are routinely sexualized in every corner of the media. More recent work on the effects of exposure to sexually explicit material via the Internet has shown an increase in the degree to which women are perceived by adolescent male viewers as sex objects.
