ABSTRACT

In a globalizing world, new strategies are required for cities to gather and retain the support needed from an increasingly complex range of stakeholder groups. This chapter reviews the strategies a city can adopt to take it forward over the long term and keep the stakeholders on board. Issues of stakeholder management, programme planning, and the dynamics of placemaking in relation to the small city are considered. In particular the need to shift from a planning approach to a more flexible programming approach is outlined, and programming issues such as timing and theming and the use of space are discussed.
