ABSTRACT

This chapter explains clinical internship programs require readers to prepare a comprehensive and detailed application package. Internship sites can vary quite a bit in the amount and type of available rotations. Relevant internships may be located within Veterans Affairs healthcare systems, academic medical centres, community hospitals and clinics, or other healthcare settings. Clinical internship programs that have a health psychology focus while also including a research component will seek applicants who have solid training and experiences in conducting, presenting, and publishing health psychology research. In general, internship programs with a health psychology focus will favour applicants who have completed clinical and research training within the health context. A clinical internship year can involve experiences or “rotations” through multiple clinics or medical units. The health psychologist’s role in medical settings depends on collaboration with physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals in the clinics and units.
