ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the basics of what a special education administrator needs to know regarding the discipline of students with disabilities. It focuses on preventing problems instead of being reactive to situations. The chapter provides special education leaders with knowledge and understanding of effective discipline for students with identified disabilities and presents information about: legislation and procedures related to the discipline of youth with disabilities, evidence-based practices including positive behavior intervention and supports, functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans. It also discusses the regulations, and cover specific recommendations related to school-wide positive behavioral supports and how this tiered process works. As an elementary school principal, this individual wishes that the special education leaders in their district knew the realities of their job. The chapter concludes with charts and tables that will help special education administrators understand what is required to successfully implement this behavioral framework.
