ABSTRACT

Different approaches to justice are compared and analysed, showing the methodological, ideological and practical challenges of working with highly normative concept(ion)s. Justice’s focus on distribution is expanded by aspects of recognition, participation and capabilities. On a theoretical level, the understanding of environmental justice is embedded in the definition of human-nature relations, the role of the environment and the framing of environmental justice. Three analytical strands are followed to visualise the development of environmental justice (concepts): time, space and content. After this embedding, seven different environmental justice concepts are presented and compared, followed by a short overview of popular concepts related to environmental justice.
