ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on official statistics and specifically from the cross-departmental document produced in 2013 that draws from multiple data sources in informing their understanding about sexual offending. It looks at university communities in more detail and at how sexual violence is legitimated, sustained, disclosed and reported. The chapter explains the Higher Education sector responses to tackling sexual violence. In view of both legal and statistical considerations, the official data has the marked benefit of using clearly defined terms and categories. In the most serious offence category around 15% disclosed in the survey that they had reported to the police and most told someone. Drawing from the data source of the Police National Computer it appears that around 84% of those convicted of a sexual offence had not previously received a caution or been convicted of a sexual offence.
