ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of the nonprofit sector in the provision of sport participation and consumption opportunities and explores the reasons why the nonprofit sector plays such a large part in the delivery of sport participation opportunities. The scope of the nonprofit sector’s involvement in sport around the world is examined, with a particular emphasis on the role of volunteers in administration, officiating, and coaching and the role of nonprofit sport organizations in facilitating people’s enjoyment of sport as active participants, supporters, or consumers. The chapter also provides a summary of the relationship between nonprofit sport organizations and the state and with commercial providers.
