ABSTRACT

Describes the common ways chronic pain presents and is effectively treated. Medication misuse, particularly with prescribed opioids like OxyContin is also described. Discussed are the use of a functional assessment, focused interventions for pain reduction, including chronic pain psychoeducation, pattern-focused therapy, and a contract for appropriate medication use that involves the client/patient, therapist, and prescribers. Complete transcriptions with commentaries for four brief sessions illustrate how specific interventions are implemented in a therapeutic context.
