ABSTRACT
The first year of doctoral work includes coursework related to the student’s field of study but is most notable for the processes of socialization to the culture of the doctoral program, development of one’s identity as a scholar, and the recognition that the educational environment and expectations differ greatly from previous experiences (Ali & Kohun, 2007).
