ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a framework for understanding different conceptions of neighbourhood authenticity. Built using three foundational aspects of a neighbourhood (people, place, practice) and three types of neighbourhood change (no change, complete change, and gradual change), the framework identifies conflicting authenticity narratives using the example of the Albina neighbourhoods in Portland, Oregon. Planners can make use of this framework to understand the different kinds of authenticity implicated in varying planning practices, as well as the tensions planning interventions inevitably create with other conceptions of authenticity.
