ABSTRACT

The New Urban Agenda (NUA), agreed by UN Habitat III in 2016, has some direct implications for planning as it is put into practice. This chapter provides some context on the UN’s role in framing planning policy, the antecedents of the NUA, including the Millennium Development Goals and the current Sustainable Development Goals. There is a discussion of the ways that the NUA is being taken forward by the EU through its Urban Agenda and then a direct consideration of its anticipated implications for planning, including that of smart cities.
