ABSTRACT

The Planning Act 2008 introduced the planning processes for nationally significant infrastructure projects. The international and EU context for this Act and the way that it has subsequently operated are discussed in this chapter. This established the fixed time frame for consideration of the proposals, including the role of the examination of the proposal by an independent examining authority, the subsequent development consent order and the implications these have for project implementation. It discusses the role of community engagement, both in the application process and in subsequent delivery. The chapter concludes with a short consideration of major infrastructure planning processes within the Brexit context.
