ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature that supports the use motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) with diverse clients as separate approaches, as well as presenting a rationale for integrating MI and CBT to benefit diverse clients. It provides case examples to illustrate how MI, CBT, and MI+CBT can be used with diverse clients to foster culturally responsive practice. The spirit of MI allows integrated approach to be a natural fit for work with diverse clients, as it requires clinicians to approach each and every client with acceptance and the belief that each individual possesses the possibility of change within him or her. Using MI in a culturally responsive manner, as illustrated in the case example that follows, is a specific implementation of being client responsive overall. Five surrounding circles represents an essential component of the counseling process: establishing a therapeutic relationship, assessment and conceptualization, planning for change/treatment planning, implementing change/active treatment, and maintaining change.
