ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses discuss how using images and certain shapes, such as dots, arrows, and circles, can facilitate the expression of ideas, feelings, and thoughts during therapy sessions. It provides several examples of ways you can use diagrams, writing exercises, and handouts to better engage your clients in therapy. In addition to using drawings and diagrams in a planful and deliberate way to address universal therapy themes and clinical problems, can use diagrams, shapes, images, and other therapist visually mediated strategies spontaneously during a therapy session. The "motoric act" of erasing words, symbols, or images on the white board will illustrate "a change process" and serve as a salient visual reminder to therapist's client of the possibility of "change." As therapist equip therapist's therapy station with different visual materials, you will be more inclined to access and incorporate visual materials into your therapy sessions.
