ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors highlight a strong rationale for the value of using various visually aided methods to augment traditional verbal therapy. They suggests that the techniques can serve as effective communication strategies to more actively engage clients' thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills during therapy sessions. By providing visual, auditory, behavioral, and movement interventions, the authors believe that therapists can facilitate clients' ability to access information, skills, knowledge, and responses that may not be as evident or accessible during ordinary therapy sessions. The authors provides diverse strategies and interventions for a wide range of challenging clinical populations who display more persistent difficulties and behaviors that have not responded optimally to more traditional approaches. They encourage therapist to try different visually mediated strategies as the need arises and as therapist and therapist's clients work toward therapy goals.
