ABSTRACT

This chapter will present information regarding adolescent NSSI and walk you through two adolescent and one young adult NSSI case studies: Emma, Rick, and Charlotte. The case of Emma involves a 17-year-old Latina with a sexual assault history. The case of Rick involves issues concerning a 14-year-old Black male who frequently and intentionally engages in self-burning using an eraser and instigating physical altercations at school during which he is physically hurt. Intersections of cultural experience and support will be addressed as a function of case presentation. The case of Charlotte will focus on work with a White, 19-year-old, bisexual, non-binary female attending university and struggling with the coming-out process. Intersections of gender expectations and identity development will be explored in relation to the NSSI through individual treatment modalities in a higher education setting. Clinical decision-making procedures will be specifically delineated with regard to treatment progression for all three cases. Risk and protective factors that are developmentally and culturally oriented will be reviewed as they pertain to each case.
