ABSTRACT

This chapter will focus on risk and protective factors for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults who engage in NSSI. We will help you to better understand the interpersonal and intrapersonal risk and protective factors for NSSI. Risk factors and protective factors are important to understand from a psychosocial and treatment approach, in addition to a neurobiological and neuropsychological perspective. The similarities and differences between common presentation, risk, and protective factors for NSSI and suicidal behaviors will be made evident. Each of the risk and protective factors found in the case studies will be detailed to consider the ways this information is important and affects the client in the scenario. Practical ways that the information could be used and identified will be addressed to assist the reader in identifying risk and protective factors within their clients.
