ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the role of the supervisor and the importance of planning students’ research to achieve the desired outcome. Once students have decided on the topic of their study and their proposal gets approved, their department should then appoint a personal supervisor for them. Most universities run dissertation workshops that cover a range of issues such as identification of research questions, assessing whether the topic is researchable, planning and undertaking a literature review, research strategies, research techniques, data analysis, writing and structuring the dissertation. Following these workshops, each student will submit a dissertation proposal. The role of supervisor is to guide students towards the production of their dissertation by discussing each part of the process. There are three aspects to consider when assessing the qualities of a Masters dissertation: descriptions of qualities, judgement of the degree of difficulty, and key words.
