ABSTRACT

There is a deep connection between assessment and understanding of students' potential. Lifting that potential requires that we make that potential visible beyond the narrow confines of standardized tests in math and reading that are made even less adequate by the fact that they are delivered only in English. Expanding on Katherine Egan Cunningham and Grace Enriquez's research with picturebooks, work with the students to refine the story, consider what the setting and the characters look like and invite each student to make a picture that describes each student contribution to the story. Language is more than just a communication tool, it reflects our culture, what we care about, how we experience the world and our relationship to others. Collage also encourages students to make connections to the present as students use bits and pieces of current images and headlines.
