ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore the complex ways in which organization, work and health have become technologized, and examine how the impacts their understandings and experiences of well-being at work. Crucially, issues of cyberspace cannot be disconnected from the global presence of technology companies themselves. The complex interrelation of human and non-human, discourse and material, is critical in unpicking understandings of the construction of the ‘healthy employee’ in cyberspace. In many complex technological and safety-critical contexts, such as the cockpit of a passenger plane, ergonomic approaches remain highly relevant, and the use of technology to assist with the complexities of designing such technology is commonplace. Technologized notions of health are increasingly embedded within organizational experiences in ways that are both more and less visible to employees. Underlying assumptions about the use and users of technology are well-established organizational discourses.
