ABSTRACT

This chapter conveys adolescent turbulence in inverse - too hot to handle and thus slept through. It discusses the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty as well as clinical experience with such 'Sleeping beauties'. The chapter considers the succession process of adolescence, the psychic isolation experienced during that phase and the splitting required to manage the conflicting desires of adolescence. It also discusses normative aspects of adolescence, which can yet become entrenched and preventive of growth. Persistent and pervasive avoidance of the turbulence of adolescence constitutes a psychic retreat from the adolescent process. The chapter describes the conflicting feelings of the older generation toward adolescents. It also conveys adolescent turbulence in inverse-too hot to handle and thus slept through. It considers a different adolescent syndrome: that in which adolescent developmental upheaval is avoided or slept through to a greater or lesser degree. The chapter expalins an affective sense of psychic isolation as an essential element of adolescence.
