ABSTRACT

How can the awareness of the compact city inspire students of architecture and urban design, most of whom have grown up in a suburban setting? How might they approach the rich yet unfamiliar complexity of the compact city in the twenty-first century – replete with diverse, thick, planned, and fortuitous encounters linking public and private life in a completely different culture? How can one expose the next generation of design professionals to the values of integration – socially, spatially, culturally, economically, and materially? This chapter presents steps taken by the School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to engage the virtues, values, and challenges of studying the compact city globally.
