ABSTRACT

The abuse of landmarks in urban design studios and practices have caused many issues of Chinese cities and distracted urban designers and architects from more critical questions. Responding to the challenge of the ageing society in Asia’s high-density environment, we propose the concept of the “soft city” as an urban design proposal for Yongsan District in Seoul. This award-winning competition entry re-structures the area with a neighborhood memory center, grid framework, vertical public space, and valley ecosystem, and aims to create an urban neighborhood that connects different generations in a city without landmark.
