ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book argues for exploiting heterogeneous and/or hybrid nodes on generic 3-D grid models to satisfy Outdoor Environment Monitoring (OEM)-specific network properties in practice. It introduces a novel 3-D deployment strategy, called Optimized 3-D deployment with Lifetime Constraint (O3DwLC), for relay nodes in environmental applications. The book then proposes two Optimized Relay Placement (ORP) strategies with the objective of federating disjointed Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) sectors with the maximum connectivity under a cost constraint on the total number of Relay Nodes (RNs) deployed. It also presents a novel communication protocol, Fixing Augmented network Damage Intelligently (FADI), based on a minimum spanning tree construction to reconnect the disjointed WSN sectors. The book also proposes the use of cognitive nodes (CNs) in the underlying sensor network to provide intelligent information processing and knowledge-based services to the end users.
