ABSTRACT

The Unit Production Manager (UPM) deals with hiring crew, making vendor deals for camera gear for grip and lighting, catering, doing all the required paperwork, budget, hiring of crew, securing locations. One of the key skills needed to be a UPM is the ability to communicate well with the producers and directors. For the costume designer, everything in life is psychological presentation. Many people think the director tells the actors what to do and the cameraman, the director of photography, takes the picture. This is true, but there is more to it. The transformation from script to screen happens through the funnel of the director of photography. The cinematographer heads up a team. He works with the camera operator, who physically operates the camera. In order to bring the script to the screen, the cinematographer has to be aware of the up-to-date technological advances and how and when to use them.
