ABSTRACT

60The medical treatment of transgender persons may include hormonal and surgical interventions that result in significant physical and emotional changes to affirm the person’s gender identity. Treatment is multidisciplinary, including mental health professionals who are trained in the ethical care of this population, working in collaboration with medical professionals. It is essential that physicians involved in transgender care be experienced in providing the hormonal therapy, and that surgeons are proficient in their provision of gender-affirming surgeries (Coleman et al., 2012).
