ABSTRACT

94This chapter includes information for mental health service providers who assess and treat transgender and gender diverse adults. Although primarily for mental health professionals, the information should be of interest to other interdisciplinary clinicians, educators, members of the legal system, family members, and other interested parties. Most of the information contained in this chapter is based primarily on information from the Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender-Nonconforming people, Version 7 (SOC; Coleman et al., 2012) produced by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the WPATH Global Education Initiative (GEI) (WPATH, 2018a, 2018b), and the author’s 45 years of clinical practice and expertise as co-founder, co-chair of GEI, and co-author of the SOC. The reader is encouraged to keep the SOC handy (located on the WPATH website – www.wpath.org/publications/soc) or a hard copy ordered from WPATH while reading this chapter and as an adjunct (if relevant) whenever they work with transgender people.
