ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on an app called phyphox that's available for free for both iOS and Android phones. It looks a free video analysis software package called Tracker, which can analyze the motion of an object in a video taken by a phone. Smartphones contain a suite of sensors that allow one to measure quantities in physics without the use of any other lab equipment. Typical sensors contained onboard a smart phone are a accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, Global positioning system (GPS), barometer, microphone, and a light sensor. phyphox is written for physics education and will allow you to record data on the phone, which can be later downloaded, or can remotely send the data to your laptop and display in a web browser. The accelerometer and gyroscope onboard a phone uses a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Accelerometer. A MEMS accelerometer is micro machined silicon wafer mass suspended by polysilicon springs.
