ABSTRACT
The common story of expatriate geographies is one in which elite migrants insulate themselves from local society through physical and social barriers, colloquially described as the “expat bubble.” This chapter describes the rise of expatriate geographies in Shanghai, showing how they were connected to layered preexisting urban geographies. The story then diverges from the familiar one by describing how expatriates have engaged in culinary placemaking throughout the city.
