ABSTRACT

Pakistan has an agriculture-based economy. The agriculture sector not only provides a livelihood to the rural population but also engages more labor force in this sector than any other sector of economy. Moreover, this sector is a means of foreign exchange earning. Above all it provides food security in the country. In spite of its persistently falling share of GDP, agriculture remains a key sector in our economy and accounts for 19.8% of GDP. No doubt 23% of the employment comes from this sector where the major crops are wheat, rice, cotton, sugarcane, and maize. The yields of major crops are showing fluctuating trends over the years. This chapter discusses production trends, constraints in productivity, and suggests ways forward for the crops of economic significance, which ensure food security.
