ABSTRACT

Allergen immunotherapy is the accepted practice for the treatment of selected patients with respiratory allergy. Subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy are effective and proven forms of immunotherapy, yet there are multiple other unproven and investigational forms of therapy available. Unproven forms of allergen immunotherapy cannot be recommended because they are unsubstantiated and/or unscientific. Investigational forms of allergen immunotherapy are grounded in scientific principles but have not undergone enough investigation to warrant their use in clinical practice. This chapter reviews the current state of unproven and investigational forms of allergen immunotherapy for respiratory allergy.
