ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the adverse effects associated with food oral immunotherapy. Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is under active investigation for the treatment of food allergy. OIT studies to date have shown high rates of adverse reactions, and its safety remains a major concern. This chapter reviews available case reports and clinical trials that have reported adverse events associated with OIT, with a focus on milk, egg, peanut, wheat, and multiple foods. Detailed information is provided regarding OIT-related symptoms, rates and severity of reactions, and treatment required.
