Introduction

In this introductory chapter, we situate the analytical framework of the volume in relation to existing research on European governance. In doing so, we argue that the decentred approach offers a significant and distinct form of analysis. To justify this view, we address three key questions. First, how does the decentred approach compare to existing approaches to the study of European governance? What are its similarities and what are its distinguishing characteristics? Second, what justifies taking a decentred approach to the study of European governance? Third, what implications does the decentred approach have for the study of European governance? As we explain, the decentred approach suggests that researchers investigate the narratives, rationalities and resistances that have influenced and accompanied European governance. At the end of the chapter, we summarize the individual contributions to the volume, including how they integrate these three themes.
