ABSTRACT

Based on two case studies of financial funds invested in land in South Africa, this chapter presents a study of the phenomenon of the financial land grabbing ‘from below’ by mobilising an analysis in terms of agro-financial filières. As a first step, it undertakes a critical review of the literature in order to establish the relevance of the filière approach. It then presents a case study of one of these specific filières, following the movement of capital from the investors to the farms. Finally, it examines the transformations in agriculture induced by the development of these new investments.
